The MetaZooGene Barcode Atlas and Database (MZGdb) is an open-access data and metadata portal synchronized with the NCBI GenBank and BOLD data repositories.   The MZGdb-NAtl subset focuses on marine fauna and flora from the northern North Atlantic and southern Arctic regions associated with the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES).   This is a collaboratively developed product between the ICES Working Group on Integrated Morphological & Molecular Taxonomy (WGIMT), the ICES Working Group on Phytoplankton & Molecular Ecology (WGPME), SCOR WG157 (MetaZooGene), the ICES Working Group on Zooplankton Ecology (WGZE), and NOAA's COPEPOD project.

This MZGdb-NAtl summarizes the geographic distribution and barcoding status of marine invertebrate, vertebrate, protist, and microbial species in the ICES North Atlantic/Arctic sub-region, the Baltic Sea, and the Mediterranean Sea.   With species lists divided into major taxonomic groups (e.g., "copepods" or "ctenophores"), this tool provides a simple overview of what species are commonly found in each region and which species have barcodes publicly available in GenBank/BOLD.   This information can then be used to focus further barcoding efforts (e.g., "Species of Genus X have all been barcoded, but not those of Genus Y" or "Species of Genus X have been barcoded in the Mediterranean but not in the Gulf of Maine.").
